Kids and Money

Kids think money grows on trees. We did too. When mom didn’t have enough money for something we wanted we’d say, “Write a check.” Today’s kids say, just use your card.” It’s important that our kids learn the value of money. Here’s an easy way to teach them. We gave our boys ten $1 bills and 3 envelopes, GOD, SAVE, and MINE. We told them the first $1 always goes in the GOD envelope. Everything comes from God and we give first to Him. The second $1 goes in the SAVE envelope. We save in this family. One day when that envelope is filled with money, you will be glad! The rest of the $$ goes in the MINE envelope. That was their favorite! Do whatever you wish with the money. We had some bumpy episodes when they bought something foolish and wasted their money. When something important came along and they didn’t have anything in the MINE envelope, they quickly learned to make better money decisions. Now they are both fathers teaching their own children. But be sure to end your lesson with this –– the most important envelope is the GOD envelope. Everything belongs to God. We want our children to learn to trust God not only with financial decisions, but with every decision. And that’s KIDS and MONEY.
